Getting Started with Google Classroom (Teachers)

What is Google Classroom?

Google Classroom is a tool developed by Google to help teachers create, share resources, and assign classwork with their students online. This tool allows learning to continue outside of the classroom anytime and anywhere, as long as you have internet connection.

How do I create a Google Classroom?

Go to

ASPEN will send a one-time roster of the classes you teach to Google Classroom. You can accept these classes on the landing page, or create your own classes. If your roster changes after you accept the course, you will have to manually add new students and manually delete students no longer on your roster.
  1. Login with your school email,, and password. 
  2. Click the plus sign on the top right corner to create a new class

  1. Enter the name of your class, section, and subject. Click Create.
  2. Check out the tabs on the top of your screen.
  • Stream: Post announcements and assignments.
  • Classwork: Create, assign, and grade all of the work in your class.
  • People: Add students and co-teachers, and communicate with anyone in your class. 
  • Grades: After you grade and return an assignment, you can view those records in the Grades tab. You can also set up a gradebook and add rubrics to assignments.
  • Class Settings menu (⚙️): Details about your class. Change control (for example, you can control whether students can post or view, or comment in the Stream). 
  1. Add Students: You can do this through e-mail or with a class code. 
  • Add by Email: Go to the People tab and click the plus icon on the right side next to students.  You can type students’ email addresses. Students will get an e-mail invitation and when they go to they will have to “accept” the invitation. 
  • Add by Class Code: Share this code with students. When they go to and use their BPS school e-mail, they can join a class by clicking the plus sign on the top right, clicking Join class, and entering the class code you provided. 
Remember, students MUST be logged into their BPS Gmail ( to connect to your Boston Public Schools Google Classroom.
  1. Set up Gradebook Sync to Aspen.
