How to Create a Google Classroom

What is Google Classroom?

Google Classroom is a tool developed by Google to help teachers create, share resources, and assign classwork with their students online. This tool allows learning to continue outside of the classroom anytime and anywhere, as long as you have internet connection.

How do I create a Google Classroom?

  1. Go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Login with your school email, username@bostonpublicschools.org, and password.
  3. Click the plus sign on the top right corner to create a new class

  1. Enter the name of your class, section, and subject. Click Create.
  2. Check out the tabs on the top of your screen.
  • Stream: Post announcements and assignments.
  • Classwork: Create, assign, and grade all of the work in your class.
  • People: Add students and co-teachers, and communicate with anyone in your class.
  • Grades: After you grade and return an assignment, you can view those records in the Grades tab.
  • Class Settings menu (⚙️): Details about your class. Change control (for example, you can control whether students can post or view, or comment in the Stream).
  1. Add Students: You can do this through e-mail or with a class code.
  • Add by Email: Go to the People tab and click the plus icon on the right side next to students.  You can type students’ email addresses. Students will get an e-mail invitation and when they go to classroom.google.com they will have to “accept” the invitation.
  • Add by Class Code: Share this code with students. When they go to classroom.google.com and use their BPS school e-mail, they can join a class by clicking the plus sign on the top right, clicking Join class, and entering the class code you provided.
Remember, students MUST be logged into their BPS Gmail (@bostonk12.org) to connect to your Boston Public Schools Google Classroom.

Where can I learn more about how to use Google Classroom?

Share to Classroom Chrome Extension: Save time and create a more interactive class with the Share to Classroom extension. The extension allows you to push webpages to any of your Classroom classes, so they open instantly on your students' computers. You can post announcements, create assignments, or save webpages to post to Classroom later.
