Setting Up Your New L4L Macbook

Rhianon Gutierrez Updated by Rhianon Gutierrez

Below is a list of items to review when setting up your new L4L MacBook. Items marked with ✅ are Required/Recommended.

✅ Check System Date and Time

In the top right corner of your L4L, your date and time should be correct. If the time zone needs to be adjusted, go to System Settings > General > Date and Time. Inaccurate dates and times can cause issues with MacBook performance.

✅ Update Accessibility Settings

On your L4L, go to System Settings > Accessibility. Consider adjusting Display (to adjust size, color, and pointer size), Zoom, Captions, and Audio. If you have any questions about these settings, explore Apple’s accessibility page or contact the BPSTechnology Digital Learning Team for a 1:1 session or group training.

✅ Set Up Touch ID

On your L4L, go to System Settings > Touch ID & Password and click “Add Fingerprint.” Follow the onscreen instructions. You can add as many fingerprints as you would like. We recommend 1-2. Toggle ON what you want to use Touch ID for (unlocking computer, installing apps, etc).

✅ Set Up Lock Screen

On your L4L, go to System Settings > Lock Screen and adjust the time to when you would like your screen to lock. Having a shorter time is more secure and also saves your battery.

Adjust Notifications

On your L4L, go to System Settings > Notifications. Toggle ON what you want to receive notifications for. Select Show Previews > Never if you do not want to receive desktop notifications. Keep in mind that notifications can be distracting and reveal personal information that you may not want to be seen when sharing or projecting your screen.

Adjust Trackpad

On your L4L, go to System Settings > Trackpad. Update your settings to what direction you want your page to go when scrolling and what you want to be the response when you click.

✅ Sign In to Chrome

Go to your Dock and open the Chrome browser. Sign in using your BPS Gmail. Turn the sync on so that your bookmarks appear and you can access your Chrome extensions and links easily.

✅ Set Chrome as Default Browser

In the top left corner, go to Chrome > Settings > Default browser and click to set Chrome as your default browser. This will allow you to have all webpages open in Chrome.

✅ Install Desktop Applications and Allow Permissions

Zoom
  1. Install Zoom at zoom.us/download. Select the Apple Silicon option. Follow the prompts to install it.
  2. Open a Zoom Meeting and click to start a meeting. Click to share your screen. Follow the prompts to enable screen sharing.
  3. On your L4L, go to System Settings > Privacy and Security > Screen & System Recording. Toggle ON for zoom.us.
Airtame
  1. Go to the 🔍 Spotlight icon in the top right corner of your L4L and type Airtame.
  2. Click to open Airtame.
  3. Follow the prompts to "Allow" permissions for screen and audio sharing and enter your password when prompted.
  4. For screen sharing, go to System Settings > Privacy and Security > Screen & System Recording. Toggle ON for Airtame.
  5. Allow permissions for audio sharing.
Self Service

Click on the BPSTech logo on your dock, or click the Launchpad icon on your dock and find Self Service. Self Service is the app to use to install BPS apps, which is the preferred way to install apps on your device over installing via the Mac App Store.

This is where you would install Vcast (for Viewboards).
Microsoft

There are no Microsoft installations available for download. See this helpdoc for alternatives

Add Wireless Headphones, External Keyboards, or Mice

If you use any of these peripherals, they can be added under System Settings > Bluetooth on your L4L. It is recommended to not have anything plugged into your USB-C ports while connecting to a Bluetooth device for the first time.

✅ Update Your Computer

It is recommended to do this at home as OS updates take more than 20+ minutes on average.

Your L4L will be running macOS Sonoma. The latest OS is Sequoia. You can update it to Sequoia at home. On your L4L, go to System Settings > General > Software Update and follow the instructions. Your computer will need to be charging in order to run the update.

Purchasing a Case

If you wish to purchase a case for the laptop, look for a case that fits Macbook Air model A2681.
