How to archive or restore a class in Google Classroom

Archiving Classes

Archiving classes at the beginning of each school year is recommended in order to keep your Google Classroom workspace clean and minimize confusion and clutter. Please follow the steps below to archive or restore classes.

Please note that BPS will archive all rostered (from Aspen) Google Classroom classes before the beginning of the new school year (classes created before the last day of summer school). If you need to restore an archived rostered class, please follow the Restoring Archived Classes directions below.

No manual classes (classes you create) will be archived.
  1. Log into Google Classroom. You can do that by visiting classroom.google.com in your Chrome browser or by clicking on the “Classroom” icon in the 9-dot (or “waffle”) icon in the top right corner of your BPS Google account:
  2. Identify any Google Classrooms that need to be archived. Click the 3-dot menu in the upper right corner of a Google Classroom that needs to be archived and select Archive from the drop-down menu that appears:
  3. This will prompt a pop-up message that reads:
  • Archiving a class causes it to be archived for all participants and will unlink your SIS if your class is linked.
  • Archived classes can't be modified by teachers or students unless they are restored.
  • Teachers can still preview and export items from your Classwork page if it’s been shared with them.
  • Class files will remain in Google Drive.

If you are ready to proceed, click Archive.

Restoring Archived Classes

  1. If you need to restore any class that you archive, mouse over to the left side of your screen and scroll all the way down. At the bottom of the left menu, you will see “Archived classes.”
  2. Click on the three dots for a class that you want to restore. Click Restore.
