What is NotebookLM?

NotebookLM is a generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) "research assistant" developed by Google. NotebookLM allows users to upload their own sources and generate a written or audio summary, mind map, FAQ, timeline, and more, as well as use a built-in chatbot powered by Gemini.

Please see BPS's Guidance on the use of Artificial Intelligence in BPS for general guidance and best practices for using any AI tools.

Who has access to NotebookLM?

Currently, Gemini is available to all staff with BPS Google accounts who have joined the Google Beta Group. Once you join the Beta Group, you can access it at https://notebooklm.google.com/ or via Clever by locating the icon below under Staff Links.

NotebookLM is for users 18 years or older. BPS students do have access to NotebookLM on their BPS student account regardless of their age.

What are the features of NotebookLM?

  • NotebookLM allows you to upload or link your own source documents. The tool will refer to those source documents when responding to your prompt.
  • NotebookLM can summarize your sources by creating an audio or text summary, making a mind map, generating a briefing document, FAQ, and more.
  • You can collaborate in a Notebook by clicking "Share" and adding collaborators. Collaborators will share the same source documents and any generated notes/summaries; however, the chatbot feature is private to you.

Tips for Responsible Use

As with any GenAI tools, there are some precautions you should take when using NotebookLM.

  • Privacy: Never enter your own or your students' personal information such as name, birthday, ID#, address, etc. Also be careful when uploading source files; never upload documents that contain personal information.
  • Accuracy: Always fact-check; GenAI tools generate text based on probability and are not always correct. NotebookLM will link to your source documents for any information that comes from them to help you verify the output.
  • Bias: Check for bias. Text and images generated by NotebookLM can take on the bias of its training data. Critically examine the output for bias before sharing with others to avoid perpetuating biases.
